What’s the point of having police, then?

 Kazi Reazul Hoque

National Human Rights Commission Bangladesh chairman Kazi Reazul Hoque on Tuesday alleged the police have “negligence” and “inaction” in investigating the rape incident of Banani.

“The police knew nothing about the rape incident even one month inside it, and could do nothing. Then, what is the point of having the police?” said Reazul Hoque.

He was speaking at a consultancy meeting styled ‘Voluntary National Review on Sustainable Development Goals’ at the conference room of the Khulna district deputy commissioner’s office.

The NHRCB chief said the accused could have been arrested had the police remained active soon after filing of the case.
“Now the police say that they can’t find the accused. If the police still try to catch the accused, it is possible,” he said.
Terming the Banani rape incident a matter of regret, he said, “It is more regretful that the police took two days to accept the case. The police resorted to dillydallying for 48 hours. This is not acceptable. They have negligence and inaction in the Banani rape incident.”
